In their pre-school year, all children who will be starting school the following September will be invited to attend our Little Acorns' sessions. The Little Acorns' sessions run once a week on a Tuesday.
During these sessions, children will be introduced, in a slightly more structured way, to all aspects of the curriculum. Whilst still keeping it fun, activities will cover recognition of letters of the alphabet, phonics, numbers, days of the week and months of the year, as well as starting to tell the time. The children will be given every opportunity to practice writing their own name - signing the register, labelling their own work and so on.
Other skills they will practice to prepare them for school include getting changed for P.E. and some catching, throwing and balancing games. They may also be given simple reading books to take home to share with you.
During the summer term, we will make at least one visit to Box Primary School to meet the Reception class teacher and Head Teacher. Visits are also made by the school to the Playgroup during the summer term so the children can ask questions and start to prepare themselves for their first year at school.
The end of term is celebrated with a Graduation ceremony after our annual sports day as we wish them farewell and good luck for their big new venture to school.
